Wadi Rum Jordan
I have visited several deserts over the last fifteen years and each one has left a lasting effect. They are brutally hot in the day with blindingly bright whites, yellows, orange and blue. However, in the evenings they offer more richer warmer colours of ochre, red, burgundy and indigo. The inspiration for this bowl has come directly out of those experiences and places, Wadi Rum desert in Jordan being the most recent.
Glacier lakes in Iceland
The inspiration for these three mugs came from my visit to Jökulsárlón (glacial river lagoon) in Iceland. The textures, colours, light and atmosphere all hitting my senses at once. The greys and blues, creams and whites, the blacks along with the constant movement of ice. I have interpreted and recreated all those elements in the mugs using abstract glaze, texture and shape.
Santorini
Sometimes inspiration for work and glazing ideas come thick and fast. Visiting Santorini had an instant impact.
The minimalist blue and white of the buildings became the inspiration for the glazing on this set of ceramics.
There are several methods of glazing going on here: from using stains and mark making, to using coloured slip, brushing on and dipping glaze.
All the glaze methods I used and experimented with achieved the desired outcome for me. Blue and white is a classic combination and one I will use in future productions drawing straight from my Santorini photographs and memories.
Prehistoric Thira Museum in Fira, Santorini
Visiting museums can be a great source of inspiration. Here is a prime example: I created these jugs, pots and candle holders after taking visit to the Prehistoric Thira Museum in Fira, Santorini.
The shapes were the main component that I took away with me. I then added my own interpretation. Some interesting and unique pieces were the result.
